Ayurveda Pitta Diet​

The following are specific guidelines from Ayurveda/Ayurvedic medicine re diet according to what's known as the doshas. If you are not familiar with the doshas or this system, first read Mark's article on the Ayurvedic doshas & Knowing your Individual Body-Type

Favour foods that are: COOL, OILY, HEAVY, SWEET, BITTER, ASTRINGENT 

Reduce(but don’t avoid) foods that are: HOT, DRY, LIGHT, PUNGENT, SOUR, SALTY

Specific recommendations.

  • Dairy. Milk, butter, and ghee are good for pacifying Pitta. Reduce use of yogurt, cheese, sour cream, eggs (particularly yolks) and cultured buttermilk.

  • Sweeteners. All sweeteners are good for Pitta except for honey and molasses in large quantities.

  • Oils. Besides butter and ghee, olive and coconut oils are best.  Pittas should reduce the use of sesame, almond, and corn oil.

  • Grains. Wheat, white rice, barley, and oats are good. Reduce corn, millet, rye, and brown rice.

  • Fruits. Favour sweet fruits such as grapes, cherries, melons, avocado, coconut, pomegranate, mangoes, sweet oranges, pineapples and plums. Reduce sour fruits such as grapefruit, olives, underripe pineapples or persimmons, sour/unripe oranges, unripe bananas and some plums.

  • Vegetables. Favour asparagus, pumpkin, carrots, cucumber, cabbage, potatoe, sweet potatoe, okra, green beans, green leafy vegetales, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, sprouts, zucchini. Avoid hot pepper, radish, tomatoes, beets, onions and garlic.

  • Legumes. Only lentils, mung beans and tofu are good.

  • Spices. Fennel, cinnamon, turmeric, coriander, and cardamom are suitable. Small amounts of ginger, cumin, black pepper, cloves, celery seed, fenugreek, salt and mustard seeds. Avoid cayenne and chills.

  • Meats. Chicken and turkey are acceptable. Avoid red meat, reduce seafood (especially in summer – very heating).
