Are you contributing some of your hard earned dollars to the billion-dollar cosmetics industry trying to keep your skin healthy and younger looking but are overlooking one or more of the real keys to healthy, youthful skin? Now I am all for using (chemically free) external skin products where needed, but realise there are at least 5 far more important things (that will hardly cost you a cent) you should be focusing on before you worry about cosmetics.

Not long ago I read that the average mother these days gets about 20 minutes to herself a day. (Seeing my sister with her 3 girls, I can hear her shouting, like I’m guessing you might be, “20 minutes, oh I wish!”)

As a mum these days (you not me!), it is an unbelievably difficult challenge to do what you desire for your kids, your family, your work, before you even get a moment to think about yourself. Equally, as they say, “Our greatest wealth is our health”. While nearly every mum will say that healthy kids is their number one priority, it’s also logical, though not necessarily easy, that looking after your own health is the absolute first step in looking after your family’s health.

I have some good news and some bad news.

The good news is I have a wedding anniversary coming up soon!!!

The bad news is, I am now being told what to write in these tips. My beautiful wife Karen (grovel grovel), has ‘instructed’ me that I must tell you all about the tremendous health benefits of being married (there’s
a catch).

I agreed, on the condition that I could include lots of marriage jokes.
* They are at the bottom!!!

Anyway, the tip, is that being married is good for your health. Well sort of.

Remember when you were a little kid, and hours would go by without you even knowing? How did that happen?

You were ‘PLAYING’. Whatever it was for you – cars, trucks, Barbie, doctors & nurses, rubbing the inside of your mates undies with ‘tiger balm’ (ouch!) etc etc, you certainly weren’t worrying about work, money or anything else we worry about as adults.

Christmas is the time for reunions, catching up with families, old friends, etc. It’s good because it shows why a few ‘drinks with the boys’ or ‘gossip (er I mean meaningful discussion’) with the girls’ is actually a great boon for your health & well-being.

Life these days is full of requests for our time, energy & expertise. As we like to be needed and feel that we are ‘giving’ to others, we can quickly find ourselves using up all our time…and thus having none left for ourselves.

Once we know our priorities (the ‘most important’ things in our life), one of the keys to our success, is having the ability (& the self-esteem!) to ‘say NO’ to excessive demands/requests.

The evening meal – a key to super energy, good sleep and weight loss … or to sickness and suffering

Food that we do not digest by the time we go to bed sows the seeds of sickness and disease.

If there was a pill that could give us up to 50% more energy, significantly reduce our risk of chronic disease and almost guarantee a healthy weight for the rest of our life, many people would probably pay hundreds if not thousands of dollars for it. Ironically, 90 – 95% of us (Westerners) do something each and every day that, if changed, could deliver all the above benefits and more. It doesn’t take any more time out of one’s day, actually saves money, and is a hallmark of the healthiest, longest living people throughout time. It is the most basic, simple, yet rarely followed wisdom of ‘eating light at night’.

Christmas – The most important thing at this time of year is to rest, relax and just have a good time.

If you’ve been busy during the year your nervous system will have accumulated stresses & fatigue you may not even be aware of. Rather than thinking you have to ‘get healthy’ straight away it’s actually more important to understand that the health of our nervous system is more important than anything else…and the nervous system is rejuvenated best by things like mental rest, joy & laughter.

So don’t worry about diets or exercise regimes now. Put your feet up, indulge a little (during the DAY not at night best), totally forget about work for a while and just enjoy spending as much time being with those you love, catching up with friends etc – We’ll help get those extra kilo’s off in the New Year.

If you are lucky enough to be in good health & spending time with people you love at this time of year, treasure it and spare a thought for those who are aren’t so blessed.

One great way to quickly restore balance & enjoying good health is to completely experience the ‘present moment’ – in a ‘transcendent’ way, not a stressed way.

Funnily enough, by far the best teachers/examples of this are young children. Before we ‘grow up’ too much, a young child’s world is full of fascination, wonder & innocence (lack of judgement/labels). To observe this state of unbounded freedom & simple joyousness actually helps that same health producing ‘vibration’ resonate within us.

This is just a simple reminder for anyone looking to lose weight.The most important thing in losing weight is to…..NOT TO FOCUS ON LOSING WEIGHT.

Focusing solely on ‘what we weigh’ is a recipe for disaster and often results in compromising our health.

Everyone of us is different, and you have a healthy (ideal) weight range for your particular body type – pre-determined genetically.Some people are naturally slim – these are the people with a ‘high metabolism – commonly known in scientific/technical terminology as ………….’BASTARDS’.Others are NATURALLY of a bigger build (the ‘cuddlies’). This is perfectly normal & healthy for them.

Not sure if you saw the email some time ago about the Philosophy of Charles Schultz – the creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip. Anyway, I thought it was so good so I’m copying it here.

Bring Nature to You:

Ever noticed that by the end of the week, you just want to ‘get out of your stuffy office’ and ‘get some fresh air’/get back near Nature? One of the best ways to avoid that feeling as well as to improve your mood, workplace productivity, energy levels & resistance to illness is to bring Nature to you.

A study by Professor Margaret Burchett, of the University of Technology, Sydney, found that potplants can reduce air toxins by as much as 20%. A study on houseplants has shown they reduce, fatigue, sore throats & cold symptoms by over 30%. What about at work? 4. Make Diet/Lifestyle Changes Gradually

In contrast to our modern Western way of wanting to go ‘cold turkey’ or change bad habits ‘overnight’, in Ayurveda, it is recommended that any behavioural change is done gradually. Doctor Raju even mentioned that this applies when wanting to give up or change some ‘unwholesome’ or ‘health compromising’ behaviour. E.g. smoking, weaning off drugs or eating yoghurt at night.
